Is It Absolutely Safe To Drink Distilled Water?

There has been a lot of confusion about the integrity of distilled water and whether or not they are safe to drink. Today, let’s dive deep into the identity of distilled water and discover the truth.

How do we Define Distilled Water?

Before we unfold any secrets about distilled water, let us understand its definition. Distilled water is the liquid created when regular water is heated into steam, condensed, and then returned to its liquid state. As per the University of Georgia, 99.9 percent of all water pollutants, minerals, and other dissolved impurities from the source water are eliminated post-distillation. Thus, the resulting distilled water is comparatively pure.

How is Distilled Water Made?

The distillation process is ideally carried out by heating water in a vast tank or suitable water reservoir. Once the water reaches the boiling point, it starts to evaporate and forms vapour. The collected vapour is then cooled by passing it through steel conduits or tubes at a comparatively lower temperature. The cooled vapour then condenses to return to its liquid form: post condensation, the liquid leaves behind, leaving mineral residue, impurities, and other contaminants. Lastly, the resultant liquid – the distilled water- is collected in a clean reservoir and stored in a sterile container.

Depending on your chosen distillation process and the volume of water you decide to distill, the whole process can take up to several hours to complete. Furthermore, you can double-distill your distilled water if you want to ensure absolute purity in your water.

What are the Pros and Cons of Drinking Distilled Water?

Pros of Drinking Distilled Water:

  • Distilled water can be purer than water from other sources: The quality of purified water highly depends on your locality. It can be more refined than spring and mineral water and is far cleaner than your regular tap water. So, if your town water supplies tainted water filled with harsh, harmful chemicals or laced with minerals and other pollutants, you are better off drinking distilled water. Distilled water gets rid of most of these pollutants in the distillation process.
  • Distilled can help cleanse your body: When you are drinking distilled water, you are drinking water with no other additives. Since distilled water is pure, many people believe it can cleanse one’s body. However, there is still insufficient information to confirm that this affirmation is true.
  • Drinking distilled water can reduce the risk of disease: As we previously discussed in this article, the distillation process eradicates waterborne pathogens from regular water. Most waterborne disease-causing bacteria die during the process of distillation. Otherwise, these disease-causing bacteria will enter your body and make you sick.

Cons of Drinking Distilled Water:

  • Distilled water has a much flatter taste: Devoid of essential minerals and salts; distilled water develops a bland taste that you may not like. The taste is way flatter and less flavorful as compared to regular or bottled waters. This tastelessness occurs when the water is stripped of essential minerals such as sodium, magnesium, and calcium that give tap water its slight flavour. All that is left in distilled water is hydrogen and oxygen.
  • You may suffer from nutrient deficiencies: By eliminating all the essential minerals from your tap water, distilled water may put you at a greater risk of nutrient deficiencies. Distilled water lacks essential minerals that contribute to our health. For example, consuming water low in calcium, sodium, and magnesium increases the risk of fracture, weak bones, preterm birth, and heart disease. Therefore, unless you are getting a sufficient supply of these minerals through the food that you consume regularly, we will not advise drinking distilled water.
  • Damage to tooth enamel: Like other standard purification processes, distillation removes fluoride from your drinking water. This eradication of fluoride may put your dental health at risk, increasing your chances of developing a cavity.
