Everything You Need to Know About the Parts of Reverse Osmosis System

The increasing awareness about health and safety among people across the globe has led to a surge in demand for RO water treatment systems over traditional systems. According to a report by Business Wire, the global reverse osmosis market was valued at US$ 6.504 billion in 2017 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.25 percent to reach a market size of US$9.227 billion by the year 2022.

Reverse Osmosis System

If you are planning to purchase an RO system, it helps to learn about the parts and how they function. Find out more about the essentials here!

Different Parts of a Reverse Osmosis System and Their Functions

  • The Inlet Valve

The inlet valve is the entry point of water into the main reverse osmosis system. It is present between the main system and the water supply outlet. It plays an important role and lets in water into the system. Also, the inlet valve is responsible for regulating the flow of water into the tank. It lets in water only when all the purified water is transferred out of the tank.

  • The Backflow Prevention Valve

The backflow prevention valve is a delicate valve that manages the inflow of water into the pre-filter. Without the backflow prevention valve, the chances of damages to the reverse osmosis water system are high. Hence, it is also known as the check valve. Even though it is tiny in appearance, this valve helps to ensure that water enters the system freely, without a backflow.

  • The Pre-Filter

Once the water flows through the inlet and check valves, it enters the pre-filter. This reverse osmosis water filter is responsible for removing the obvious contaminants such as sand and dirt. The RO systems by Peninsula Water Conditioning Inc. use a Millennium filter that goes one step further and removes particulate matter down to the 5-micron level, thus delivering extremely clean water for drinking.

  • Reverse Osmosis Membrane

The RO membrane helps to clean the water, get rid of all microscopic contaminants, and render it safe for drinking. Although the water may look clean after the removal of dirt and grit, the presence of smaller particles can still make the water unfit for human consumption. This membrane of the reverse osmosis drinking system filters out the smaller particles from the water and makes it safe for drinking.

  • The Drain

It is an open outlet or pipe through which all the contaminants and impurities picked up from the water so far get disposed.

  • The Flow Restrictor & Pump

To prevent the outflow of excess water, a flow restrictor is present at the drain line immediately after the membrane. When the reverse osmosis water system is pressurized, a lack of resistance can release water. Depending on the pressure on the water inlet, the flow restrictor and pump maintain the pressure in the system. Lack of enough pressure will prevent the purified water from flowing out of the faucet. On the other hand, too much pressure can impact the purity of water.

  • The Storage Tank

The purified water is stored in the storage tank. Water is held in by this pressurized system to regulate the inflow and outflow. The storage tank is lined with two bladders. There is a butyl water bladder at the top of the storage tank. A bladder filled with air is present at the bottom of the storage tank. The pressure generated by the lower bladder and the pressure of the inlet valve helps regulate the flow of water.

  • Final Filter

The final filter is a charcoal filter that removes any residual taste or odor. Hence, the water that flows out of the reverse osmosis system is naturally colorless, odorless, and safe for drinking.

  • The Faucet

The faucet delivers the final, purified, and safe water into your cup. Opening it activates the entire purification process in the reverse osmosis water filter.
